Why African Entrepreneurs Outperform Their Peers When the Playing Field Is Leveled

Entrepreneurs in Africa often face significant challenges to their efforts to build businesses and thrive, including limited infrastructure, unstable or restrictive governments, and a largely transient, unskilled workforce. But a recent paper co-authored by Wharton management professor Ann Harrison shows that if the playing field were made level, African firms would actually outperform their peers in other countries in terms of many measures of productivity and growth. The so-called “Africa curse” is a myth, the researchers say.
